Even if you are one of the newer names on the slots production scene, as Yggdrasil is, one of the unwritten rules of game development is that you need at least one title with an underwater theme. Given that no others are specifically springing to mind unless you count the sea on Vikings Go Wild, Reef Run immediately manages to carve out something of a niche for itself. The same unspoken traditions also dictate that such games will be easy to play, not least because there are thousands if not tens of thousands of players out there with a passion for such a theme, and we are confident that this developer will be able to deliver some truly compelling action along the way.
What to Expect
It soon becomes clear when playing this game that Yggdrasil has taken everything that we said in the introduction on board, although before we get into the gameplay specifics, we will have to tip our hats to the graphics on this one, which make for one of the most stunning underwater video slots ever made. The theme is definitely cartoonish, but that takes nothing at all away from an outstandingly pleasant mobile gaming experience.
The board is standard and the win lines are too, coming in as they do at just twenty, which should be more than manageable for most tastes. You can merrily spin away and watch the animations that are every bit as good as the static graphics, but the main goal will always be chasing the clam shell scatters, as three, four or five of them on the board at the same time will result in the award of ten, twenty or an impressive sixty free spins respectively.
Spins can be retriggered, even if you only land two scatters in fact, with that adding two more to the total. It happens frequently, but this is by no means the best part of the game. That award goes to the fact that every symbol now comes with its own multiplier. They all start at one, effectively meaning no multiplier at all, but every time you win with a given symbol, the multiplier increases. Just one win will see it rising to five for subsequent wins with the same symbol, and if you hit it again it will rise to ten, before reaching a twenty times boost for three wins in one round. A standard ten-spin round will not see these multipliers getting out of control as much as players would like, but if you happen to hit the sixty-spin round then you are in for a real treat.
The MobileCasino.net Verdict
Reef Run achieves what it sets out to do as being an entertaining game that does not push the boundaries too far, although we can count on one hand the number of slots that we have played over the years that have multipliers assigned to specific symbols. It works well, but we will point out that it can lead to plenty of variance, and some bonus rounds are bound to be a little more disappointing than others. Nevertheless, if you are in to the underwater theme, this is a game that stands out through both graphics and gameplay and we are, of course, more than happy to recommend it.
