WMS may not be as closely related to branded mobile slots as some of their premium competitors, but one series that has rarely let us down over the years is The Wizard of Oz. We have seen some great games in the range over the years and even though some of them might be starting to feel a little long in the tooth, they have always paid plenty of fan service and delivered some great features along the way. The Wizard of Oz – Road to Emerald City is actually quite a bit different to what we have come to expect though, with just three reels on display. That certainly does not immediately make it a bad game however, and we are going to dive right in to discover just whether this game manages to do the name justice.
What to Expect
So, three reels of action are most definitely the order of the day here and we will say, as we have several times before over the course of these reviews, that it is not exactly our favourite setup. We simply prefer more wins and more symbols, but if anyone appreciates three reels and traditional symbols, it would be players in the UK. Those symbols are definitely traditional, with bars and 7s leading the way when it comes to wins and the fact that there are not all that many of them on display ensures that players should be able to at least put together some frequent wins on this one. There are nine win lines too, which is at least somewhere near the high side of things, although even that is nothing on Play’n Go’s recently released Sweet 27. Nevertheless, help is at hand when it comes to creating as many winning combinations as possible, with both the game’s logo and the yellow brick road symbol serving as wild cards at all times.
One reason why we tend to shy away from classic slots action comes down to a general lack of features, but there is actually one included here on this game. Any of the main symbols on the board may have an emerald attached to it and if you land three or four such symbols in view at the same time, you can expect to receive a character bonus and this is where the portraits at the top of the board come into view. Finding out what all of the features have to offer is a main part of the fun here on this game, so we will not be going into detail on all of them here, but it is fair to say that players have a shot at instant cash, a variety of free spin rounds and even a consolation prize if they are unable to get anything else to stick.
The MobileCasino.net Verdict
We almost feel bad for categorising The Wizard of Oz – Road to Emerald City as a classic slot as it does not really do the game justice in general. It is one of the most involved three-reel slots that we have played and, in answering our own question from earlier, it definitely manages to do the Wizard of Oz slots franchise justice. Indeed, there are more features on offer here on this game than on most video slots and, as noted, a big part of the fun is finding out all about them. We still feel that this game will not be for everyone but it is solid and exciting for the right kind of player and is well worth checking out if you are a fan of the theme and want to keep things simple.
