Even though there are hundreds upon hundreds of Novomatic slots out there on land, on mobile and online, we like to think that we have played almost all of them – and then we saw The Wild Wood coming up for review. Prior to playing it for the purposes of putting this feature together, we had never even heard of the game, let alone played it. Clearly it never quite made it into UK land based casinos! Nevertheless, we are never averse to the idea of using a fresh set of eyes to cover a game, and while Novomatic’s themed slot titles can be hit or miss sometimes, we are hoping for the best from this one as we play through it.
What to Expect
The accessibility mantra from the developer clearly continues to be in full effect here on this game, even if the theme is quite nice in its own right. Much of the board is covered with the playing card ranks, which we virtually expect on these kinds of games now, and the prettier themed symbols are there for the bigger wins. However, the action is not exactly rapid as there are only ten win lines. Sometimes, we can cope with ten lines when the rest of the game is good, such as on Book of Ra for example, but The Wild Wood never really gets far enough out of its comfort zone to get the pulse racing.
There are at least a couple of extras on the game, starting with the wild card. The Wild Wood’s logo is the symbol to keep an eye on as it will cover for any symbol on the board except for the bonus scatter, and it will also double the value of any prizes that it participates in too.
The main event, as you might have expected, is a free spins bonus round and this is where the scatter symbol comes in handy. The moon is the symbol of choice and players need three of them in any position to trigger an admittedly generous sixteen free games. That does not change within the round either, as landing three scatters continues to trigger sixteen more games, effectively ensuring that there are no limits on how long the round can effectively be. We have only rarely retriggered the spins during our testing, but the round itself is already pretty solid, especially now that the same scatter symbol now acts as an additional wild for the duration too.
The MobileCasino.net Verdict
This game is never going to set the world on fire, which is probably a good idea given how many trees are around, but it is a pleasant enough addition to Novomatic’s mobile slots range. Everything feels like it has been done to appeal to the lowest common denominator, with no real flashes of inspiration, but if you are already a fan of The Wild Wood then the opportunity to play it on just about any device and from anywhere is one that you can indulge in at the great mobile casino brands recommended above.
