We only get a handful of branded releases out of Microgaming each year, and it is fair to say that we never know quite what to expect. Sometimes they are dabbling in some of the most iconic movies of all time, like Terminator 2 – Judgement Day and Jurassic Park, and at other times you end up with subject matters that are perhaps not quite as iconic – with Bridesmaids being a case in point. We have never seen the movie, but we understand that it is a comedy that did pretty well with audiences. So, players and developers alike have to get out of their comfort zone a bit here, as the traditional action genre has been cast aside in favour of what we can only assume is something like a female version of The Hangover!
What to Expect
We have played enough branded Microgaming slots to know the formula by now, and let’s just say that we were not exactly surprised to see the base game board consisting of a combination of characters from the film and playing card suits. More impressive was the fact that they have gone with forty win lines on the game together with four rows of symbols, and this gives players ample opportunity to make use of the fact that all of the character symbols come stacked two high as standard. Also potentially stacked is the wild card, represented by the Bridesmaids logo, and that fills in regularly to keep the action going on a game that is already pretty generous on the rapid wins.
Technically, there is only one feature on Bridesmaids, which is on the low side for a branded slot, but it goes a bit deeper than normal to compensate. To start with, players are looking to land three or more of the scattered cupcake symbols on the board at the same time, with the reward being entry onto the wheel of fortune. First up, players will need to choose one of four cupcakes, which provide an immediate boost to the potential outcomes on the wheel. One will apply a multiplier to pink prizes on the wheel, another will do the same to blue prizes and a third will do both at the same time. Finally, you may be able to discover the multiple points bonus, which adds two more pointers to the wheel, allowing players to take down three prizes at the same time.
When all of that is finished, it is on to the wheel itself. The various segments contain a number of cash prizes, together with the chance to trigger four different features. The best of the lot, as far as we are concerned, are the Flying High free spins. These consist of ten free games with rolling reels and stacked wilds that feel like they can go on forever, especially if you manage to set off a chain of decent wins.
There are more free spins up for grabs as part of the Friendship bonus, and there are ten spins in store once more. This time, wins are paid in both directions and more character symbols are added to the board. One of the characters will also now serve as a pseudo wild, filling in as any character on applicable wins.
Those two free spins bonuses are complemented by a couple of pick bonuses. In the Boutique, players are looking to find Bridesmaids, with every matching pair making for a win. These picks continue until you get a pair of brides instead. Alternatively, in the Magic Moment round, players can pick from ten photos to uncover cash, and can keep on going until they discover a carrot – which we are pretty sure has some kind of significance to the movie but is sadly well and truly wasted on us!
The MobileCasino.net Verdict
Bridesmaids was, over the course of this review, never in danger of knocking over Terminator 2 as our favourite Microgaming branded slot, although it has the slight advantage, especially in the context of this site, of being available on mobile devices unlike Arnie’s classic. What we do have here is a game that is solid and fun, with the variety in the bonus rounds keeping things fresh. The bonuses are also packed with enough potential to make up for the relative disappointment of landing an instant win a few times on the bonus wheel rather than free spins. We consider Bridesmaids to be a good mobile slot, and it might even enter the realms of being very good if you are a particularly big fan of the movie in question!
