You will have to have been playing BetSoft slots for quite a while to remember the first Mad Scientist game from BetSoft. It came out when the company was in a transitional period between standard slots graphics and the 3D visuals that we know and love today, with the board itself being pretty two-dimensional and only the scientist and his workbench being rendered. Most importantly, that game never made it onto mobile screens, and still hasn’t at the time of this review. However, Madder Scientist has done, and it is a noticeably upgrade on the first.
What to Expect
There are no transitional periods here on this game in the looks department. This one is completely rendered in three dimensions, and the scientist returns to take his place at the workbench at the front of the screen once again. You don’t even have to take BetSoft’s word for it that he is madder either – in the first game he looked like a chemistry teacher; on this one he looks more like a serial killer! However you look at it, the graphics have received a real upgrade, and the conventional thirty win lines are on board for some decently fast-paced wins.
One of the early draws of the game is a feature that we have not seen since reviewing Microgaming slots, and never on mobile devices before. Following any spin, players can pay to respin any one reel – at a price. The game is not stupid, and the more likely a win, and the bigger it can be, the more the respin will cost. It can actually take some real self-control not to spin all of the value out of the game with this feature and we would have to say that Madder Scientist is not a slot game for the faint of heart!
There are a couple of pick bonuses on the game, with the beaker bonus being the more interesting. Land a beaker on reels one, three and five at the same time and you will be able to enter a separate screen and keep on picking wins until you hit ‘collect’. There is also a small but real chance of hitting free spins, although we have only ended up with this on a couple of occasions following hours of play. Those spins are not available in the serum pick bonus, although the cash prizes are on par. There is no collecting here though, as one pick is one win and that’s all there is to it.
Finally, what we consider to be the main event on the game involves the switch symbol. Land three of them in any position and one of the reels bearing that symbol will turn completely wild, and also stick there for a while as some respins play out. Every switch you land while they are in effect will add another spin to the total, but this round can be hit or miss depending on which reel is wild and how many spins you end up with overall.
The MobileCasino.net Verdict
We like the look and feel of Madder Scientist, and we definitely appreciate the noticeable upgrade over the first game. However, it is not all good news as anyone that is fond of consistency in their gaming experience may find this one too much to handle. The reel respins can also be downright dangerous in the wrong hands and if you are the kind of player that might end up chasing a win that will probably never come, it can lead to a bad result pretty quickly! The game is solid, but it is an acquired taste, and we can conclude that there are games that we would prefer playing at the BetSoft mobile casinos above instead of this one.
