Microgaming is definitely not the first name that comes to mind in terms of slot games based on famous horror movies of the past. That honour belongs to NetEnt, and while some of those games are getting a bit long in the tooth, the developer has always done a good job of bringing iconic action to the reels. Microgaming, on the other hand, have always offered up a mixed bag when it comes to branded games and the closest experience that they have to the horror theme in that regard is Hellboy, which is so old as to be not even worth playing any more. With all of that said, we cannot simply discount their effort at a Halloween slot too soon, especially when it involves one of the most iconic characters in the genre.
Let’s just say that we are not going to get too excited about what lies in store. Jurassic World boasted all of the hype that would be expected from such a big name game but in the end it felt like pretty standard Microgaming fare with just a few added bells and whistles which, rather than being great innovations, were clips and sounds stripped straight out of the movie. However, we have never seen Jurassic World and probably did not have the same levels of hype as fans would have. At the same time, we have seen Halloween and the thousands upon thousands of sequels on many occasions, so we are actually rooting for this one to be good.
David Reynolds of Microgaming is clearly something of a fan too, as he commented: “Halloween is a true classic and set the standard for modern horror films. It was immeasurably influential in the slasher genre of movies, so it is great to be working with such an iconic and respected brand.”
“Embracing all the elements of what made the movie such a success, our games team are busy developing a slot for release later in the year.”
‘Later in the year’ is really all we have when it comes to a potential release date. However, this is Microgaming that we are talking about. When it is Christmas, you will find Santa and presents on the reels. When a major football tournament is on, you can be that they will be on hand with their balls, goals and trophies. Dare we speculate that this game might well be hitting our screens on October 31st or somewhere around then? If the design team is indeed still hard at work on the game then that does not leave them with a lot of time to make things truly spectacular, but for all we know right now they could have been hard at work, day and night, since Halloween last year!
The only other concrete information on the game right now comes from Ryan Freimann, SVP of Compass, the company that now owns the rights to Halloween and presumably licensed them to Microgaming, who said: “We are excited to team up with Creative Licensing and Microgaming to bring Michael Myers and Halloween home to all of our loyal fans in the best possible ways through top licensees who create products that we feel honour the character, film and franchise.”
Clearly Ryan has not yet had the chance to play Jurassic World and Hellboy! Nevertheless, for every branded disappointment from Microgaming, there is a Terminator 2 – Judgement Day which is still right up there among our favourite branded slot games of all time. Like we say, we actually want this one to be good and will remain hopeful. Naturally, when the game does become available, you will be able to find all of our thoughts and opinions as part of the review, and the chances are that we will be treated to further previews between now and then so keep an eye on the blog for all of the latest information on the official Halloween mobile slot!
